Major businesses like Walmart, Target, Kohl’s, Macy’s, and Best Buy opened their doors on Thanksgiving for the better part of a decade in an effort to attract customers (and controversy). Retailers continued to push the envelope by opening earlier each year after the midnight opens of 2011 that started this trend. On Thanksgiving Day in 2019, Walmart opened at 6 p.m., while JCPenney opened at 2 p.m.
While this tradition wasn’t without controversy, it seemed here to stay.
That is, until COVID-19 devastated the retail sector and the world in 2020. Almost every big retailer indicated that they would be closed on Thanksgiving Day and that Black Friday sales would be quiet.
Major stores continued to observe the Thanksgiving holiday in 2021, although they held more-or-less typical sales that began in the early hours of Black Friday.
How will this affect Thanksgiving in 2022? It is still in progress. Some large shops are delaying the sale and declaring they’ll be closed on Thanksgiving (Nov. 24 this year). And customers agree that was the right move: 68 percent of American consumers believe that retailers should be closed on Thanksgiving, according to our holiday study from 2021.
But many retailers still haven’t announced their plans one way or the other.

Thanksgiving Day Officially Closed Stores in 2022

Costco

Nothing unexpected here. Even before COVID-19, Costco always remained closed on Thanksgiving. Additionally, it is one of the few significant merchants that is closed on other federal holidays, such as New Year’s Day and Labor Day. There are already a lot of Costco’s early holiday offers available.

JCPenney

On October 13, JCPenney made the following announcement: “JCPenney will remain closed on Thanksgiving and open bright and early (5 a.m.) on Black Friday.” Special in-store coupons will be given to the first customers in line.

Kohl’s

On October 11, Kohl’s announced that it would be closed Thanksgiving 2022. However, it will definitely have a live online sale that day for Black Friday.

A few hours later, Kohl’s will confirm their Black Friday.

Macy’s

On October 24, Macy’s released a Black Friday ad scan that made it clear the store would be CLOSED on Thanksgiving and open at 6 a.m. on Black Friday. However, Macys.com’s online sale will begin on November 20. Additionally, it will host two pre-Black Friday events from November 7–13 and from November 14–19.

REI

The outdoor business has a long-standing tradition of closing on Thanksgiving AND Black Friday while continuing to pay its staff and urging everyone to #OptOutside instead. This practice dates back eight years. It has also declared that it will keep this custom going forever. From this point on, REI will always be closed on Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday.

Sam’s Club

On Thanksgiving, Sam’s Club will be closed (this is nothing new; it did so even before the pandemic). Additionally, it will be closed on Christmas and New Year’s Day (see its holiday hours).
It typically maintains its regular hours on Black Friday, opening at 10 a.m. for ordinary subscribers and at 8 a.m. for Plus members.

Target

The resurgent “staying closed on Thanksgiving” trend has been dominated by Target. It announced (10 months in advance) in January 2021 that it would be closed on Thanksgiving of that year. Target’s CEO also said in a memo to staff in November 2021 that the store will always be closed on Thanksgiving.
Target’s doors won’t be open on Black Friday, but early customers can queue up to their heart’s content or browse for deals online (Target has a tradition of launching Black Friday Deals about a week early).

Ulta

Because they “cherish the beauty of time spent with loved ones,” Ulta stated in an email, they will be closed on Thanksgiving 2022. There is still no official news on Black Friday hours!

Thanksgiving Day Store Openings 2022

Why Are Stores Closing on Thanksgiving This Year?
