Of course, it may seem like Black Friday has already been here for months due to retailers launching early Black Friday specials like crazy and hastily announcing they’ll be closing on Thanksgiving for a third consecutive year.

Black Friday “DAY” as a concept has seen a lot of change lately. Retailers were already offering their Black Friday specials online days in advance before the outbreak, making in-store Black Friday activities seem almost incidental. The year 2020 caused an even greater upheaval. Due to the pandemic, merchants scaled back their in-store celebrations, scrapped their early Thanksgiving opening hours, and held much more subdued Black Friday festivities with fewer offers, capacity restrictions, and lots of hand sanitizer.

Black Friday shopping activities in-store made a nearly-normal comeback in 2021. But shops continued to forgo Thanksgiving openings in favor of extremely early Black Friday schedules (pretty much what they were doing more than a decade ago, before opening Thanksgiving night became A Thing around 2010).

So how will Black Friday in-store activities and store hours look in 2022? According to a recent survey we conducted, shoppers appear to want to visit stores again on Black Friday. More than half (53%) of American consumers said they plan to look at Black Friday offers in-store. Compared to last year, that is an increase.
